Trump shows off his amusing side at annual dinner

President Donald Trump headed back to Washington D.C. to attend the Gridiron dinner on Saturday night

Trump joked he only turned up at the annual event to ruin everyone's evening in person. "Nobody does self-deprecating humor better than I do", the president joked.

"I want to thank the press for all you do to support and sustain our democracy", Trump said, concluding the evening. "That's why I accepted". Every president since 1885 has attended the annual dinner of the Gridiron Club and Foundation at least once. Since then, every U.S. president has managed to attend at least one of the events during the course of their term. The organization said the event attracted about 660 journalists, media executives, lawmakers, administration officials and military officers.

The president talked about planning his remarks and said he discussed them with the "funniest" people in the White House, including Vice President Mike Pence.

He continued by describing the recent turnover at the White House as "exciting and invigorating".

Accused frequently of being thin-skinned, President Trump reassured the audience that "nobody does self-deprecating humor better than I do", the Associated Press reported.

"Now the question everyone keeps asking is, 'Who is going to be the next to leave? Steve Miller or Melania?'"

"We were late tonight because Jared could not get through security", he said.

He went on to mention former aide Steve Bannon, saying he "leaked more than the Titanic", and he referred to Vice President Mike Pence as his "apprentice".

Despite the president previously appearing to be far less comfortable with such comedic shows than his predecessor Barack Obama, who gave several amusing speeches to the White House Correspondents Dinner, which Trump previous year avoided, he seemed to enjoy his new role as comedian in chief. By the way, I always knew, someday, you're going to fire her.

"After all, you the New York Times are an icon. And the only difference is I still own my buildings". Hours earlier he tweeted that the mainstream United States media had "gone insane".

The President relishes attacking the press but his most searing quips targeted his administration and his family.

And all the while - before, between and after the two politicians' sets - the journalists of the Gridiron Club carried out another tradition, dressing up and performing musical skits swiping broadly at politicians and themselves.

Cotton made light of what he called the source of his personality: the common touch of Harvard, the sensitivity of the army, and the personal touch of Dick Cheney.
