Seoul: US Must Lower Threshold For Talks With Pyongyang

South, North Koreas hold talks on North's participation in Paralympics

However, US President Donald Trump's administration responded to North Korea's gesture with caution, stressing that the main goal of dialogue with North Korea has to be denuclearization.

South Korea's Unification Ministry said the countries agreed that the North Korean delegation to the Paralympics will cross into the South via a land route on March 7.

Trump has vowed to use force if necessary to prevent North Korea from acquiring a nuclear-tipped missile that could strike the US mainland. But Koh Yu-hwan, a professor of North Korean studies at Dongguk University in Seoul, said that North Korea's primary strategy was not to avoid sanctions but to get the United States to accept it as a nuclear weapons state in return for a freeze on its nuclear program.

On Sunday, North Korean state media accused the United States of provoking confrontation on the Korean peninsula with the sanctions.

Meanwhile, the USA men's curling team is still celebrating its first gold from Saturday, but we learned that there was actually another American curling victory over Sweden eight years ago.

But Washington ruled out any possibility of talks before Pyongyang - which a year ago staged multiple missile and nuclear tets - takes steps towards denuclearisation.

But the closing days of the Games were overshadowed by the USA announcement that it was imposing its largest package of sanctions aimed at getting North Korea to give up its nuclear and missile programs.

Trump's daughter, Ivanka Trump, a senior White House adviser, met Moon on Friday as part of a weekend trip to lead the US delegation to the closing ceremony of the Winter Olympics, but no official meeting between the American and North Korean delegations was planned.

Dozens of activists held a protest near the luxury Seoul hotel where Kim and seven other North Korean delegates are staying, ripping apart the general's portrait and torching the North's national flag.

It marked Moon's second meeting with North Korean officials in just about two weeks.

His visit has enraged families of the sailors who were killed in the torpedo attack.

North Korea has denied its involvement in the sinking.

She was here for the Winter Olympics closing ceremony which took place on Sunday, reports Yonhap News Agency. She was seated close to the North Korean delegation, led by senior ruling party official Kim Yong-chol.

Moon also said that North Korea should show a commitment to denuclearization, something it has refused to do.

Moon has been working tirelessly to steer the United States and North Korea away from what he considered a collision course, urging them to open talks.

She was the center of a frenzy of attention, especially when she appeared at the opening ceremony and was only a few feet from U.S. Vice President Mike Pence. The North Korean leader later said he wanted to boost a "warm climate of reconciliation and dialogue". The United States applied new sanctions Friday in an extension of what it calls a "maximum pressure campaign" to force North Korea to disarm.

The North's state-run news agency ran a story Sunday quoting a "spokesman for the Korea Asia-Pacific Peace Committee" as saying that Pence insulted Kim's sister with his hard-line rhetoric after returning to the USA and "we will never have face-to-face talks with them even after 100 years or 200 years". "North Korean relations should be improved together", the statement said.
