South Korea's Moon hosts talks with North Korean leader's sister

DPRK delegates meet with S. Korean president at Blue House

South Korea's then president Kim Dae-jung, who won a Nobel Peace Prize for his Sunshine policy of engagement with the North, visited Pyongyang for an unprecedented inter-Korean summit with late leader Kim Jong Il.

North Korea's band of all-female supporters was unable to inspire the historic joint Korean women's ice hockey team as they were dumped out of the Pyeongchang Olympics with an 8-0 defeat to Sweden on Monday.

Moon was all smiles as he greeted Kim Yo Jong, the sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, and Kim Yong Nam, the country's 90-year-old nominal head of state, for lunch at the presidential residence.

And that folder? It turns out it contained a personal letter from Kim Jong Un to South Korea's president.

In a meeting with the South Korean president on Thursday, Pence said the United States will continue to put maximum pressure on the North until the reclusive state comes to the dialogue table to discuss its "permanent" and "irreversible" denuclearization.

But South Korea's presidential Blue House said Pence had a meeting scheduled with USA athletes and had only planned to stay briefly to greet other officials.

Moon also stressed the need for North Korea to resume its dialogue with the United States.

The North Koreans have invited Moon to visit Pyongyang in what would be the third inter-Korean summit talks since their 1945 division.

According to the South Koran officials, U.S. Vice President Mike Pence also attended the reception.

Kim Yo Jong, 28, is the first member of the ruling Kim family bearing the bloodline of the sacred Mount Paektu, a centerpiece of the North's idolization and propaganda campaign, to cross the border into the South since the 1950-53 Korean War. The South Korean president met with a delegation of North Koreans who were in the country for the PyeongChang Winter Olympics.

"Adding new players obviously isn't easy but I think going into this tournament we knew it was going to be tough", said the joint team's Canadian coach Sarah Murray.

Murray, a 29-year-old Canadian with no background in worldwide diplomacy, must select 23 players from her roster - recently boosted to 35 to include 12 North Koreans - to suit up for the game in sweaters emblazoned with an image of a unified Korean peninsula.

Only 22 will dress to play Saturday night, leaving Murray the hard task of deciding whether to play any of the North Koreans or sit some of the South Koreans she has worked with for many weeks.

Kim Jong-un wanted to meet Moon "at an early date", a spokesman for the Blue House said.

Up the road, however, an elderly husband and wife, each draped in the South Korean flag, denounced Moon as a "fake president".

Officials in Tokyo suspect North Korea is trying to chip away at the united front of the United States and its East Asian allies as global sanctions bite the hermit country.
