Airplane evacuated at John Wayne airport with smoke showing

Southwest has'multiple glycol deliveries scheduled for Monday and expects to resume'close to normal operations at Midway

Hundreds of passengers were stranded at Midway Sunday, with deliveries of more de-icer not expected until Monday, according to the airline.

Southwest said the airline company will continue to work with passengers to accommodate travel plans and have updated their customer accommodation policies on their website.

Flights departing and arriving from Chicago's O'Hare Airport didn't fare much better.

The fire - which has since been put out - broke out on Southwest flight #2123, causing its emergency chutes to deploy, according to the airport.

"Throughout the storms, we've actively worked to manage our glycol levels [which is used to de-ice aircraft] but due to the severity of the winter weather Southwest has proactively cancelled about 220 flights as of midday Sunday", the airline told The Chicago Tribune.

Sunday was the second time this winter that Southwest has canceled flights at Midway due to de-icing difficulties. "Although some ground crews had seen some smoke coming from the tail, which is where the auxiliary power unit is, the pilots had very quickly pulled the fire extinguishing system and if there was any fire back there, it was extinguished quickly", said OC Fire Authority Battalion Chief Ric Schultz.

As of 6 a.m. Monday, 13 flights were canceled at Midway in total, with delays averaging less than 15 minutes, officials said.

Several waves of snow fell on Chicago, including a storm on Friday that dumped as much as a foot of snow in western areas.
