Mikaela Shiffrin waits again as women's slalom postponed

Sui Wenjing and Han Cong of China perform in the pair figure skating short program in the Gangneung Ice Arena at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Gangneung

The strong winds meant that once again, USA skier Mikaela Shiffrin's first medal race in South Korea would be put off.

Shiffrin originally was supposed to get started with the giant slalom on Monday; that race was rescheduled for Thursday and will now be her first at these Winter Games.

Alpine events have now been delayed three times this week due to weather; the women's 15 km biathlon event was also postponed today. This is Austria's longest gold medal drought in a men's alpine skiing event, just ahead of the super-G, which is from February 16, 1998, when Hermann Maier won gold.

Aamodt, Miller, Ligety, and Norwegian Lasse Kjus are the only men with both an Olympic title and World title in a men's combination event.

Shiffrin would also become the first American skier to win multiple gold medals in a single Alpine event.

"It is definitely unfortunate that we weren't able to race today, but it is important we have a fair race for all of the athletes and today's conditions would definitely not have been fair", Shiffrin said.

After sitting in 26th place following the downhill portion of the race where he battled headwinds, the 33-year-old tech specialist delivered a blistering slalom run in the second leg to secure fifth place, 1.45 seconds behind victor Marcel Hirscher of Austria.

"Everyone is a little bummed out when a day like this happens, but they do happen, so we're quite used to it", said Kristofic, who with Shiffrin and speed queen Lindsey Vonn on his team will be hoping for a major medal haul.

All of the shifting means that they will try to open the 11-race Alpine program Tuesday at the Jeongseon hill with the men's combined, which adds times from one downhill run in the morning and one slalom run in the afternoon.

Norway, Austria, and the United States have won this event a record two times at the Olympic Winter Games. That is something to which she is accustomed: World Cup races frequently are held on consecutive days, and twice this season she went three days in a row. Prior to these Games, there were some who suggested that Shiffrin could possibly be the first skier to medal in all five disciplines in the same Olympics.
