Trump Asks For Due Process As Staffers Resign Amid Abuse Allegations

President Donald Trump attends the National Prayer Breakfast at a hotel in Washington DC

Though the subject of the tweet is unclear, it comes just a day after Trump defended former staff secretary Rob Porter, who resigned amidst allegations of domestic abuse from his two ex-wives.

"Peoples lives are being shattered and destroyed by a mere allegation", Trump wrote.

He says "some are true and some are false" but says there's "no recovery for someone falsely accused". "Some are old and some are new", he tweeted.

Trump's sudden concern for due process immediately struck a nerve with his critics on Twitter, who pointed to the president's involvement with the Central Park Five case.

Kelly, whose appointment as chief of staff was initially seen as an step towards restoring order and discipline, has been the subject of growing controversy over the past several weeks.

Trump Friday wished his former aide well, noting that Porter had done "a very good job in the White House".

Trump said Friday he was surprised by the allegations, but noted that Porter said he was innocent.

The report said the couple also had a history of arguments that turned physical, though the police report said they attended counseling.

"The Democrats sent a very political and long response memo which they knew, because of sources and methods (and more), would have to be heavily redacted, whereupon they would blame the White House for lack of transparency", Trump tweeted.

Sorensen denied the allegations, and told the Post that Corbett had "punched him on multiple occasions;" he provided "photos of what he said were injuries his ex-wife inflicted upon him during their fights, including bruises and scrapes".

On Saturday, Trump seemingly doubled down on his defense of Porter, speaking out in favor of those accused of abuse and sexual misconduct more generally.

"It's fair to say we all could have done better over the last few hours or last few days in dealing with this situation", said White House deputy press secretary Raj Shah, who faced a barrage of questions about Kelly during a press briefing.

Porter-who resigned on Wednesday-is reportedly involved romantically with White House communications director Hope Hicks, for whom his second ex-wife, Jennie Willoughby, says she's anxious. According to Trump, all women accusers are lying.

"Mr. President, what you call "political" are actually called facts, and your concern for sources and methods would be more convincing if you hadn't chose to release the GOP memo ('100%') before reading it and over the objections of the FBI", Schiff posted.

Colbie Holderness, who was married to Porter from 2003 to 2008, has provided photos to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and news outlets of a black eye she says he gave her. Jennifer Willoughby, Porter's wife from 2009 to 2013, provided a copy of a 2010 protective order she filed against him. Kelly, meanwhile, has signaled a willingness to resign over the scandal.

Routinely, Trump has accepted claims of innocence from men facing similar allegations, including Fox News head Roger Ailes, anchor Bill O'Reilly and former Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore, who was accused of inappropriate contact with teenage girls.

David Sorensen, a speechwriter who worked under Trump senior policy advisor Stephen Miller, abruptly resigned Friday night as The Washington Post was reporting on domestic abuse allegations by his ex-wife Jessica Corbett.

Pence said in an interview in South Korea that he was "appalled" by the allegations and that he would look into the matter when he got back to Washington.
