Hamish Watson wants Scotland to handle 'expectations' in Six Nations better

Scotland's Greig Laidlaw at training

Scotland skipper John Barclay admits his side have a point to prove against France - but only to themselves. Laidlaw came across to cover but a wicked bounce fooled the scrumhalf, allowing Thomas to collect and score.

"We underperformed - it happens every now and again". With help from the experienced Peter Horne at inside centre, Laidlaw expects a more balanced game this time.

The winger's chip over the top left Maitland stranded, and although Laidlaw was back to cover, the bounce evaded the scrum-half.

The nature of Scotland's defeat has seen all optimism from outside the camp extinguished after they conceded four tries, and a further loss would all but end their chances of making history after such a promising start to life under Gregor Townsend.

"He's back in form and it's a credit to him it is so quickly (after injury)".

Simon Mail previews the second weekend of the Six Nations with Scotland hosting France and Ireland taking on Italy.

THIS match will take place on Sunday, February 11. Scotland had all of the running and won another penalty in kickable-range in the 70th minute. But it was France, who were unlucky last Saturday against Ireland, that started like a bull at the gate at Murrayfield thanks to the tremendous Teddy Thomas. The hosts can be expected to come out firing in attack after the criticism they received this week and look worth support to cover a three-point first-half handicap at Evens.

It became all the stronger after 64 minutes when Laidlaw scored with a scrum penalty, drawing Scotland level for the first time since the start of the match.

It soon began to pay off as France were pressed back deep inside their own half. On 56 minutes substitute Baptiste Serin, on for Machenaud, made it 26-20. Against Wales, they spread the ball wide and tried intricate moves, but they couldn't make much ground because they didn't have the power players to make busts through the middle.

France - G Palis; T Thomas, R Lamerat, G Doumayrou, V Vakatawa; L Beauxis, M Machenaud; J Poirot, G Guirado (C), R Slimani, A Iturria, S Vahaamahina, W Lauret, Y Camara, M Tauleigne.

"We need to go out and be positive and obviously it's a must-win game for us if we want to have anything to do with this championship, but it's must win for France as well, so it's going to be a tough game".

S Hogg; T Seymour, H Jones, P Horne (all Glasgow), S Maitland (Saracens); F Russell (Glasgow), G Laidlaw (Clermont Auvergne); G Reid (London Irish), S McInally, S Berghan; G Gilchrist (all Edinburgh), J Gray (Glasgow); J Barclay (Scarlets, capt), H Watson (Edinburgh), R Wilson (Glasgow). Reps: S Lawson, J Bhatti, J Welsh, B Toolis, D Denton, A Price, C Harris, B Kinghorn.
