Why you should totally wait to buy Apple's new HomePod

Reviewers love HomePod's loud, bass-y sound, but hate how dumb Siri is

Amazon Echo essentially houses Alexa, the personal assistant developed by the huge company.

Currently, Siri does not communicate with Apple TV, which is a baffling omission considering all the recent work put into developing the latter, and the ease with which Google Home users can use Chromecast to watch something on the big screen.

More: A smart home sounds like a great idea. In particular, those who already own Android devices will definitely benefit from the Google Assistant, and the ability to collaborate with other Android-driven hardware.

Apple's Siri has fallen a little behind the pack in this department, although the consumer electronics giant is largely pushing its speaker system as a music playback device.

In Australia, Google's Home has been available for some time, while Amazon's Alexa devices - the Echo, Echo Dot and Echo Plus - was only released this month, finally bringing Antipodeans in line with their USA brethren. Each of these devices is compatible with three major ecosystems, meaning that smart home support is pretty standard across the device range.

The set-up process is less cumbersome than for the Echo or Google Home, which use a companion app and require some WiFi network selection. Whereas Apple Music and Siri can come up with custom playlists based on songs, artists, or genres you know you like, there's no podcast search.

The hands-free options the HomePod offers are wide ranging; in the right office environment, the device can add convenience, save time, and improve productivity, not to mention morale. If you want to do the same on the HomePod, you'll need to use the AirPlay feature streamed from another Apple device.

Meanwhile, the Google Home Max can be combined with Chromecast Audio or speakers with Chromecast to play music across multiple rooms.

One of the worst HomePod limitations is its inability to distinguish different voices, meaning anyone can ask the HomePod to read or send text messages on behalf of the HomePod owner if the owner said yes to all the setup prompts, according to the Verge. Also, Apple sometime later this year to enable a stereo sound effect when two HomePods are connected wirelessly.

The Google Home Max lets users shop using just their voice.

That's how I was able to play Spotify, Pandora, TuneIn, SiriusXM and other services through the speaker, without any assistance from Siri.

What's clear is all three devices promise voice control, wireless streaming music, home automation, news and weather, Internet searching, lists and calendars and other productivity and information services.

"Siri on HomePod is not as full-featured as Siri on your Macs or iOS devices, and this was done by design". Away from Apple's demo space, it sounded just as good as I'd remembered. Apple has marketed HomePod's superior audio quality as its defining feature, and some have wondered how well the speaker will be able to project itself in retail settings which are often noisy and crowded.
