Second White House official resigns amid domestic violence accusations

Corbett said she described those episodes to the Federal Bureau of Investigation last fall as it was conducting a background check of Sorensen, according to The Post.

The New York Times reported last night that Kelly had told West Wing officials he was willing to step down over the controversy, though he had neither formally resigned nor was expected to do so.

What are the latest allegations?

Mr Sorensen's former wife claimed that he was physically and emotionally abusive during their marriage, according to a report in the Washington Post.

She alleged that Mr Sorensen ran over her foot with his auto, extinguished a cigarette on her hand, threw her into a wall, and made her fear for her life while they were on a boat off the coast of Maine.

When the allegations first emerged against Mr Porter a number of senior aides rallied around him, and the White House acknowledged that personal relationships may have played a role in their response.

What happened with Mr Porter?

Mr Sorensen denied the allegations, the Post reported, and claimed that he was abused by her.

Colbie Holderness, Rob Porter's first wife, claims he punched her in the face, as shown in this 20015 image.

But there are growing questions about how Mr Porter managed to maintain a position of high influence despite the allegations. "Trump couldn't say enough good things about Porter, and didn't even mention the abused women".

On Friday, President Donald Trump called Porter's departure "very sad" and said he wishes the ex-staffer "well".

Chief of staff John Kelly, who was aware of the allegations also praised Mr Porter, saying every individual deserves the right to defend their reputation.

"That's like saying: "That axe murderer out there, he's a great painter", Biden said.

Trump then highlighted Porter's denial of his two ex-wives' allegations that he struck them while married.

"In fact, I was the victim of repeated physical violence during our marriage, not her", Sorensen said in a lengthy statement.

Apparently, they still take place-officials reportedly learned of the abuse claims against Porter during his background check months ago-but if nobody's going to actually pursue the claims made against a member of the highest governmental body in the us, what the hell is the point of having them in the first place? A source said Trump gave Shah a mild rebuke for the comment, advising him never to apologize.

To then go on to protect that abuser sent yet another message to women nationwide that those now in power will ignore them, silence them, not believe them or blatantly not care when they come forward with stories of abuse. He issued a statement Wednesday calling Porter "a man of true integrity and honor".

Who knew what and when?

People familiar with the matter told CNN Friday that the president was dismayed by the handling of the abuse allegations against Porter, with whom Hicks is romantically involved.
