Olympics - Denied US flag with coin toss, Davis snubs ceremony

Flag-bearing Hamlin's highest honor yet

It was a feel-good story for a few hours: Luge veteran Erin Hamlin gets the chance to enter her last Olympics carrying the USA flag into the opening ceremony of the Pyeongchang Games, winning that distinction after a vote by some of her fellow athletes.

Hamlin, who won a bronze medal in luge in 2014, is a two-time world champion. Davis is a five-time Olympian, and was the first African-American athlete to win an individual gold medal, winning the 1,000 meters race at the 2006 Torino games.

The Winter Olympics haven't even officially started yet, and we already have our first controversy - and it's over who'll carry the United States flag in the opening ceremony. Hamlin, who is white, won a coin toss, which was the predetermined method of picking a victor if all else failed in the athlete-led process. The USOC, clearly aware a tie was possible, let it be known before the games that a coin flip would be used to decide the victor if that happened. The next step was a coin toss.

Shani Davis competes in the men's 1,500 meters during the U.S. Olympic long track speed skating trials January 6 in Milwaukee.

Olympics - Denied US flag with coin toss, Davis snubs ceremony

Alcott competed at four Winter Olympics herself and she has revealed the struggle that athletes face behind the scenes as they wait to follow the flag bearer out. But on the day after the announcement of Hamlin's selection, it appears that Davis is unhappy with the results and feels he is more entitled to carry the flag than Hamlin. Shortly after the coin hit the ground, he took to Twitter to vent about how the whole situation was "dishonorably" handled. Apparently, the process to pick the flag bearer was not flawless because it came down to a vote of 8 and there was a 4-4 tie which was decided by a coin flip. The final tally came out as a 4-4 tie between Hamlin and Davis. But Pyongyang's decision to send a high-level delegation including leader Kim Jong Un's sister to the Olympics has raised hopes in the South for rapprochement.

It equally wasn't right to reference black history month reference in your retort. "They're really pumped. I'm sure my brothers will be". He also owns two Olympic silver medals to go along with his pair of golds. She plans to retire after the PyeongChang games.

CBS News correspondent Ben Tracy says her influence in the regime is so significant, South Korean media call her the North's Ivanka Trump.
