Egypt announces major military operation in Sinai and Nile Delta

Egypt begins security operation against ''terrorists''- Army spokesman

Following the bloody terrorist attack on Rawda mosque that killed more than 300 people in November 2017, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi ordered his military command to use all force necessary to secure the Sinai Peninsula within three months.

"In addition, the operation will include the implementation of other military and training missions and exercises in all strategic directions with the aim of tightening of control of the borders of the Egyptian state and to ensure the achievement of the planned aims of the clearing of terrorist pits from the areas where they are found, and to protect Egyptian society from the evils of terrorism and extremism, while also confronting other crimes that affect internal security and stability".

On Friday morning, the Egyptian Armed Forces announced the launch of a new major operation to confront terrorism in north and middle Sinai and other areas in the Nile Delta and the desert areas west of the Nile valley.

The Egyptian Army has announced on Friday the launch of a major operation against extremist militants across the country.

The navy was boosting maritime border security "to cut off the influx of terrorists", he added. Sissi was elected in 2014 in a landslide with promises of restoring security.

The Sinai Peninsula had always been demilitarised under the terms of the 1979 peace treaty between Egypt and Israel, but as the violence intensified the government responded by ramping up its military presence, with the tacit approval of Israel.

Egypt has for years been struggling to contain an Islamic insurgency in the turbulent Sinai region.

Over the years, most attacks have targeted soldiers and police, but civilians have also been killed. The insurgency, nevertheless, showed no signs of abating.

Later, militants fired a projectile at el-Arish airport and struck an Apache helicopter that was part of the entourage of Egypt's defense and interior ministers who were in the city on an unannounced visit on December 19. Egypt is now building a buffer zone around the airport.

The terrorists were members of the outlawed Hasm group affiliated with the banned Muslim Brotherhood group of former Islamist President Mohamed Morsi, who was ousted by the military in July 2013 in response to mass protests.

Egypt also built a buffer zone along the border with Gaza to curb the flow of militants and weapons through a vast tunnel network under the border.

Egypt has been under a state of emergency since April past year, after two suicide bombings at churches claimed by Daesh killed at least 45 people in the cities of Tanta and Alexandria.
