Flu season expected to last another 4-6 weeks

6 things you can do right now to help prevent the flu

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention hasn't determined how effective this year's vaccine is; some estimates put it at around 20 percent effective against Influenza A, the season's most common strain.

"A high number of deaths can typically be associated with severe seasons when the influenza A/H3 virus causes most of the illnesses", said Wilma Wooten M.D., M.P.H., County public health officer.

"We haven't seen any letting up", Barbera said.

Officials said the vast majority of reported cases - 78 percent - are in residents who have not been vaccinated for the flu this season.

Mary Bassett stressed at a news conference Tuesday that it's not too late to get the flu shot.

In 2017, there were 394,783 such cases reported.

The flu is primarily spread by person to person contact via coughing or sneezing. The H3N2 has been the predominant flu strain this season.

The CDC said this year's flu season is the worst the nation has seen since the 2009 swine flu pandemic.

Health officials recommend flu shots as the best means of preventing the flu and lessening its symptoms.

According to the CT Department of Public Health, there have been almost 3,000 positive cases of flu with 802 of them in New Haven County.

Both the cold and flu are viruses, meaning they can not be "cured" by antibiotics, and both will abate on their own timetables.

"People don't understand what a killer flu really is and tend to be lackadaisical about getting vaccinated". Both flu-related deaths were recorded in children.

Dr. Shereen Alikhan, a pediatrician, said doing so can especially help kids who are susceptible to getting sick.

They recommend staying home from work, school and other public places if you are ill - at least 48 hours after you've been fever-free without the aid of medication. Frequently wash your hands with warm water and soap, avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth and avoid large crowds at all cost.
