Thousands from north Syria, Iraq reach Afrin, demonstrate to condemn Turkish attacks

2 soldiers martyred in Turkey’s Afrin operation

It's the third day running the besieged area, to the east of the Syrian capital, has been targeted by Russian-backed Syrian forces.

Haq said the United Nations is also concerned for the safety and protection of two million people living in the city of Idlib, where airstrikes and shelling continue to be reported daily, resulting in civilian deaths and injuries as well as the destruction of civilian infrastructure. Dozens of people were seriously injured, and a number of medical clinics had been destroyed, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a United Kingdom -based war monitor.

Civilians in Syria are bearing the brunt of a new onslaught by Russian and government forces against the last rebel-held areas of the country. And rescue workers and doctors on the ground in Idlib have accused government forces of using chlorine bombs in the offensive.

Earlier Wednesday, French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian told BFM TV that "all indications show us today that the Syrian regime is using chlorine gas at the moment" in attacks on rebel-held areas.

The panel also expressed "deep concern" over the escalation of violence in rebel-held Idlib province and in Eastern Ghouta, Pinheiro said.

The district of Eastern Ghouta, controlled by rebel factions including Islamists, suffered some of its worst bloodshed in years on Tuesday, when 80 civilians were killed. The UN has named the Afrin region led by Syrian Kurds as one of the areas of interest.

It is a weapon of fear, created to terrorise a population, even if it doesn't kill in large numbers. The attack followed two others in the past week that killed at least 10 people, including several children.

"When (US Secretary of State Rex) Tillerson comes we will share these ideas with him sincerely, we will share our expectations", he said.

"Seven civilians were killed and 15 wounded in a Syrian regime air strike on the town of Hammuriyeh", said Rami Abdel Rahman, who heads the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

State news agency SANA said air defenses confronted the Israeli planes, which it said were flying over Lebanese territory when they fired the missiles.

"We implore the worldwide community to speak with one voice, taking every opportunity to publicly pressure the Assad regime, and its supporters, to cease its use of chemical weapons and hold those responsible accountable for these brutal attacks", the U.S. State Department said in a statement.

The Israeli air force has said it has struck arms convoys of the Syrian military and Lebanon's Hezbollah almost 100 times since the war in Syria began more than six years ago.

The statement did not say whether the incident caused casualties.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu referred to Israel's policy during a lunch with North Atlantic Treaty Organisation ambassadors in Jerusalem last month. Israel captured the Golan Heights from Syria in 1967 and annexed it in 1981.

Thousands of civilians from northern Syria and Iraq on Tuesday arrived in Syria's Kurdish-run northwest region of Afrin to hold demonstrations condemning the Turkish military's operation in the area.
