Vic Fangio expected to return as Bears defensive coordinator

Oregon State Athletics

LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) - The Chicago Bears have hired former OR coach Mark Helfrich as their offensive coordinator.

Fangio, 59, will sign a three-year contract, according to ESPN. Charles London (running backs) and Harry Hiestand (offensive line) have also been hired by Nagy in the days following his introductory press conference at Halas Hall.

Helfrich won 33 games in his first three seasons and went to the first College Football Playoff championship game before being fired after going 4-8 in 2016.

Helfrich was a 37-16 in his four seasons leading OR, including a Rose Bowl victory and national championship appearance in January 2015. The team said Friday it has hired former OR coach Mark Helfrich as offensive coordinator and Chris Tabor as special teams coordinator.

He then worked as quarterbacks coach at Boise State (1998-2000) and Arizona State (2001-05) before serving as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Colorado (2006-08).

They fired Fox after three seasons with a 14-34 record that gave him the second-worst winning percentage for a Chicago coach.

Perhaps he would be considered for the defensive coordinator job under Nagy for the Bears.

He is trying to help turn around a team that missed the playoffs for the seventh straight season and hasn't finished above.500 since Lovie Smith was sacked after going 10-6 in 2012.

The Bears finished the 2017 regular season ranked 10th in total defense (319.1 yards per game) and ninth in scoring defense (20 points per game), despite losing six key contributors or starters to injured reserve. Cornerback Kyle Fuller, who had his best National Football League season in 2017, is a free agent the Bears likely will try to re-sign.

Helfrich should be particularly helpful for No. 2 overall pick Mitch Trubisky, who exclusively ran a spread in his 13 starts at North Carolina.

Tabor spent the past seven seasons as Cleveland's special teams coordinator.

His brother, Ron Turner, works as the team's offensive consultant and nephew Cameron is the assistant quarterbacks coach.

London spent the last four years as the Texans' running backs coach. He was an offensive assistant with the Bears from 2007-09.
