Apple's battery replacement program could mean millions of fewer iPhones sold

[Update] iPhone Batteries From Third Parties Might Not Match Apple's Price

According to company analyst Mark Moskowitz, a whopping 77% or 519 million iPhone users are eligible to replace their battery via the program.

Even if your older iPhone isn't being throttled, it could still be worth getting a battery replacement by Apple.

Following a wave of controversy last week regarding power management in older iPhone models, Apple has reduced the cost of out-of-warranty battery replacements from $79 to $29.

However, according to a 9to5Mac report citing the Barclays analyst note, sales of 16 million iPhone units will possibly be lost.

Ever since Apple revealed that it has been purposely capping CPU performance on older iPhones to compliment the battery health, many iPhone users with older models have started worrying about the health of the battery on their phones. Apple made one of its biggest confessions recently, apologizing to device owners that their iPhone battery might be the cause of slowdown and shutdown issues. Your selected store or service center could be out of stock of batteries or even if they do have stock the replacement could take anything between a few hours and a few days depending on the number of iPhones ahead of your device in the replacement queue. With the iPhone being the primary driver of AAPL stock - last quarter, iPhone sales accounted for 55% of the company's revenue - the news is not good for Apple investors.

Moreover, considering this year's iPhone X was Apple's most expensive smartphone but delivered slightly lower battery life than the cheaper iPhone 8 Plus, it makes sense that Apple is exploring new battery technology to try to give its next-generation 5.85-inch OLED iPhone a battery life bump.

It should be remembered that the iPhone is Apple's principle cash cow.

Apple's battery-gate issue first came to light just before Christmas after a iPhone user shared performance tests on Reddit that suggested that their iPhone 6S had slowed down considerably as it had aged.

As we closed out 2017, Apple customers with older iPhones got confirmation that they weren't going insane.

That being said, Barclays had some positive things to say about Apple. Apple naturally says that the throttling of the devices was in the name of what's best for consumers, but some aren't buying that response. Once test are finished, and customers would like to have the battery replaced, we will set an appointment to replace the battery. iCentre will endeavour to replace the battery and return the iPhone on the same day.
