Honda Insight Prototype is ready for its Detroit debut

2019 Honda Insight Prototype Silver Rear Quarter Left

Launching nationwide later this year, and positioned as a premium compact above Civic in the Honda passenger auto lineup, Insight elevates itself above other compact hybrid models with its sleek sedan design, roomy five-passenger cabin, and refined driving performance, along with high fuel efficiency. The front will adopt Honda's aggressive new styling theme, with a metallic strip running the full width, tying in with Honda's other US-market models. The Insight's battery pack is located under the rear seats, allowing a full-size boot and 60/40 split folding. The second-gen Insight that debuted in 2009 was a five-passenger hatchback with a raised, elongated tail that made it hard to distinguish from the Toyota Prius.

Honda Canada expects the Insight to consume an average of 4.7 L/100 km based on NRCan test procedures.

Certain smartphone functions will also be integrated through the available Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and Wi-Fi enabled updates.

Oddly, Honda's LaneWatch system is used for the Insight, revealing what's in the car's right blind spot on the infotainment screen.

The Insight will feature the Honda Sensing safety suite as standard, which includes automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, road departure mitigation, adaptive cruise control and traffic sign recognition. It does not work for the left side of the auto. Although details of the propulsion system won't be confirmed until the show, it's nearly certain the new Insight will feature the latest version of Honda's Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) hybrid powertrain.

The parts coming from outside the USA likely include the hybrid powertrain, which is similar to that used in the 2018 Honda Clarity Plug-In Hybrid, which went on sale in December.

In most conditions, Honda said the Insight will operate on electric power only. Its powertrain will be a hybrid one mixing 1.5-liter Atkinson-cycle engine assisted by an electric motor powered by a Li-ion battery pack positioned under the rear seats. No word yet on whether there will be a plug-in version.

With its long wheelbase platform, the 2019 Honda Insight will offer class-leading passenger space and a host of premium features including available perforated leather seating, an 8-inch Display Audio capacitive touchscreen and a 7-inch digital LCD driver's meter.

The third-generation Insight was conceived as part of the Honda Electrification Initiative, its worldwide commitment to reduce greenhouse gases and offer electrified vehicles in two-thirds of its offerings by 2030.

Rolling off the same IN production lines as the Civic, its maker was careful to say that it used parts sourced "both domestically and globally".
