Packers to name Pettine defensive coordinator

The expectation is that the Green Bay Packers will hire the former Browns head coach to serve as defensive coordinator. His last job in the National Football League was as Head Coach of the Browns and before that, he spent four seasons as defensive coordinator for the N.Y. Jets under Rex Ryan and one season in Buffalo as DC under Doug Marrone.

But Pettine has some pelts on his wall as a coordinator, most notably in his four years with the Jets and Rex Ryan. He spent the 2013 season as the Bills' defensive coordinator, and his unit ranked 10th. Prior to that, however, Pettine was a successful defensive coordinator.

Pettine's scheme, like Ryan's, is rooted in a 3-4 system that relies heavily on press man cornerbacks and myriad blitzes.

Pettine will inherit a Packers defense which finished 22nd in total defense, the fourth time they've finished in the bottom third of the league in the last seven years under Capers.

It was reported earlier in the week that Philbin was interviewing with his former team and NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported Wednesday that Philbin will be the new offensive coordinator.

He went 10-22 in his two seasons as the Browns head coach. Capers had not finished with a top-10 defense since the Packers' Super Bowl season of 2010, when it ranked fifth.

Green Bay coach Mike McCarthy announced last week the team would interview Packers assistants Winston Moss, Darren Perry and Joe Whitt for the job.
