More than 60% who try a cigarette become daily smokers, study says

Smoking prevalence has fallen dramatically in recent years but almost 8 million Britons still smoke

Among them, almost 68.9% reported that they had progressed to smoking daily. Three of the surveys were conducted in the U.S. between 2001 and 2013, another three in the United Kingdom between 2010 and 2014, one in Australia in 2013 and another in New Zealand in 2009.

The study was based on the data collected from the Global Data Exchange which consisted data of eight surveys which has been conducted since 2000.

New analysis of survey data suggests that almost 61% of people who try their first cigarette become daily smokers, at least temporarily.

"It is possible that somebody who is a lifetime non-smoker did try a cigarette when they were a kid but it didn't make any impression on them, and they forgot it or don't see that it is important enough to report", Peter Hajek, professor of psychology and Director of the Tobacco Dependence Research Unit at Queen Marys, told the Guardian.

'We've found that the conversion rate from "first-time smoker" to "daily smoker" is surprisingly high, which helps confirm the importance of preventing cigarette experimentation in the first place'. Among those, 68.9% said they had gone on to smoke every day.

At least two-thirds of those who try cigarettes go on to become daily smokers, even if only temporarily, research suggests.

Have you ever just smoked a cigarette to "try" it?

According to the Office for National Statistics, 7.6 million British adults were smokers in 2016 - with Northern Ireland having the highest proportion of people with the habit.

In the year 2010, smoker's percentage in the United Kingdom was 19.

Making smoking a habit doesn't take very long, the study has said.

Most of the people who are now addicted to smoking are the ones who started off with "what harm could one cigarette do". To everyone's surprise, the company is running full-page advertisements in several United Kingdom newspapers, stating that it aims to stop selling cigarettes in Britain sometime in the future, notes CBSNews. The different surveys used different methodologies and yielded different results, so the estimated 68.9 percent "conversion rate" from experimentation to daily smoking has a margin of error (between 60.9 and 76.9 percent). She stated that the government is reluctant to introduce licensing for tobacco retailers even though both the public and retailers are in support of this, notes the BBC.

Smoking rates in the United Kingdom have been in long-term decline.
