Vivo is the first Smartphone Manufacturer to use Under-Display Fingerprint Scanner

We expect that the Vivo X20 will be the smartphone bearing the under-display fingerprint sensor. Rumor mills were earlier speculating an under the screen fingerprint sensor for the iPhone X. As we all know the iPhone X got a Face ID feature and ditched the Fingerprint Sensor (TouchID) altogether. This year, the smartphone company is ready to launch its final product Consumer Electronic Show (CES) in Las Vegas. These fingerprint sensors can be embedded inside the display and will be scratch-proof as well waterproof.

The in-display fingerprint sensor will sit between the mainboard and the OLED panel where it will illuminate the finger and then process the beams of light. A new motion teaser from Vivo hints to a new smartphone with fingerprint scanner mounted under the display. "Today's showcase of a ready-to-produce in-display fingerprint scanning smartphone featuring an optical fingerprint sensor is a big leap forward in bringing consumers this long-awaited, futuristic mobile experience". The new model may come with thinner bezels as the fingerprint sensor will move under the display.

Before this launch, last month, Synaptics announced that a "Tier 1" manufacturer will be introducing the said technology at CES 2018. The taller display has also resulted in the end of the physical home button on the front of the device, where the fingerprint scanner was typically placed. This newest fingerprint scanning technology will let fans unlock their smartphone through a one-touch fingerprint scanning technology right through the smartphone's display. The only difference I experienced was that the Vivo handset was slower - both to learn the contours of my fingerprint and to unlock once I put my thumb on the on-screen fingerprint prompt - but not so much as to be problematic. Whereas others, just trans-locate the fingerprint scanner to the back, either beside the primary camera or below it, either way there are more chances of users accidently touching the lens-cover and leave sweaty smudges on it, resulting in distorted images.
