Trump wants immigration compromise - and border wall

Trump, Key Lawmakers Negotiating Immigration Policies

The objective of the meeting was to hammer out a temporary spending bill likely to include an extension of President Barack Obama's Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival program, or DACA, for some immigrants brought into the United States as minors. Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota and Jon Tester of Montana, as well as Democratic Rep. Henry Cuellar of Texas, who frequently votes with Republicans on immigration and border issues - a sign that the White House is looking to pick off as many Democrats as it can even if it can't work with the party's key negotiators. In order to protect those under DACA, however, Trump shared three goals he expects the upcoming bill to accomplish: enhancing border security, ending chain migration, and eradicating the visa lottery system. Trump said, "it should be a bill of love".

Democrats counter that additional physical barriers along the border with Mexico wouldn't necessarily be the same as the massive, endless wall Trump vowed to build. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., one of the most vulnerable Democrats, cautioned that she's not yet seen details, but said there was "certainly a border security package I could accept". "Truly, it should be a bill of love and we can do that". DACA has become a bargaining chip as Congress moves closer to having to pass a spending bill or shut down the government.

In September, Trump said he was scrapping the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, but then delayed enforcement to give Congress six months - until March - to craft a lasting solution. "You are not that far away from comprehensive immigration reform". The source said Trump told them beforehand the press would come in for the top.

Trump has long said he would not protect Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) participants - of which there are almost 800,000 who were brought to the United States illegal as children - from deportation without ending so-called chain migration, guidelines that allow people in the United States to bring in family members from overseas, and the visa lottery system, a program that distributes around 50,000 visas to countries where there is a low rate of immigration to the US.

Trump said he would "take the heat" politically if lawmakers were to look at broader action that would provide a pathway to citizenship for about 11 million undocumented immigrants living in the United States.

"And remember this, its just common sense, thet are not sending us their finest, OK", Trump said.

"I really do believe Democrat and Republican, the people sitting in this room, really want to get something done", Trump said. It will save a couple minutes or a few seconds.

A group of Democrats are arguing to hold firm on DACA because if things collapse, they would hopefully win the House and have more leverage in 2019. "Whatever it includes to make the border secure I am going to be for".
