Trump to Attend Davos, White House Says

US President Donald Trump speaks to the media in the lobby of Trump Tower in Manhattan New York US

Last year, President Xi Jinping of China attended the forum, which began just days before Mr. Trump's inauguration, becoming the first Chinese leader to mingle with the corporate and media crowd in the mountain village.

An annual meeting of the wealthy global elite - some of whom have been quite critical of Trump - Davos seems a unusual venue for a president who has criticized free trade agreements and the effects of globalization on US industries.

The annual conference, to be held January 23-26, has brought together worldwide leaders of nations, business and finance at the Alpine ski resort since 1971 to discuss global cooperation.

The gathering at an Alpine ski resort is a redoubt of globalist, free-trade thinking starkly at odds with Trump's worldview.

Trump waves as he walks across the South Lawn of the White House to depart by Marine One, in Washington, DC, USA, 16 June 2017.

This year's event will put Trump in the same room as numerous worldwide elites he attacked during his 2016 campaign.

Sarah Sanders said Trump was excited to attend the tony forum in the Swiss Alps, his fifth foreign trip as president. He withdrew the USA from the Trans-Pacific Partnership, a trade agreement between Pacific Rim countries, and pulled out of the Paris climate accord, a commitment to reduce carbon emissions.

It is rare for a US president to attend the Davos gathering. There's a randomness element that's hard to quantify.
