AT&T drops plans to carry Huawei smartphones

Huawei Mate 10 Pro

Huawei had planned several announcements for the CES event this week, including speculation that it was ready to reveal a sales tie-in with AT&T, according to the earlier reports.

U.S. telecommunications carrier AT&T has apparently abandoned a plan to sell smartphones made by China's Huawei Technologies. Huawei's CES 2018 keynote is happening tomorrow, and it'll be interesting to see what the company has to say.

The firm trails only Apple and Samsung in terms of worldwide sales and an accord with a U.S. network may have been enough to push Huawei into the No.1 spot. However, the failure to secure a contract with AT&T or fellow USA giant Verizon has drastically limited the Chinese company's growth in the American market.

The deal reportedly died after members of both the US Senate and House intelligence committees wrote to the FCC.

According to the Journal, Huawei had been expected to announce Tuesday at the CES trade show in Las Vegas that it had reached an agreement with AT&T, its first partnership with a major USA mobile carrier.

The Mate 10 Pro could have been the first flagship device from the company to be available through network operators in the US.

Huawei's plans for growth in the US led to heightened scrutiny by Congress. It is possible that we get to know more about this in the coming weeks, but if you wanted to pick up a smartphone from the company's lineup, you will only be able to find them through online retailers or on its official USA -based store. Huawei has stated that while the Mate 10 Pro won't be offered via a carrier in the US, it would be offered via open channels.

According to The Information, Huawei's smartphone deal with AT&T was killed by "political pressure".

The Information reported that AT&T was urged to drop the deal following a letter from the U.S. Senate and House Intelligence committees to the Federal Communications Commission raising concerns about Huawei's plan to launch products through United States carrier.

Huawei has continually denied allegations that it spies for China. The latter's mobile devices will not sell through a USA telco anytime soon, but Android fans need not fret.
