Alligators, encased in ice, endure North Carolina's cold snap

When they feel that water is freezing, they move their nose out of the water and go into hibernation and try to preserve body temperature until the snow melts. "(It's) just an absolute unbelievable survival technique and these guys were built tough millions of years ago and they remain tough today".

Despite this ingenious survival instinct, Howard said gators can't stay in icy water indefinitely.

Shallotte River Swamp Park in Ocean Isle Beach shared a breathtaking video showing the park's alligators with their nostrils poking through the ice. "This is the time of year when they are just hanging out and waiting for it to get warm". The alligators then enter "a state of brumation, like hibernating".

"They can sense temperature changes and will stick their noses out of the water to breathe", Howard said.

Ocean Isle Beach, a quaint little town from North Carolina, victor of the Best Restored Beach award of 2008 and not to mention the home of the Shallotte River Park Swamp, where alligators are as common as dandelions on a field. Their metabolism slows down and they can stay at the bottom of the water for up to 24 hours on one breath.

And, when the weather warmed up, the alligators went right back to sunbathing to increase their internal body temperatures.

Some users also questioned as to what would happen if someone steps on a frozen alligator.

That's why, when a North Carolina park featuring gators froze over in recent days, they can be seen seemingly stuck in the ice.

After nearly being eradicated in the early 20th century, alligators have made a comeback in North Carolina.
