Russia: US exploiting Iran protest to sink nuclear deal

People protest in Tehran Iran Dec. 30 2017 in in this

Efforts by the Trump administration to marshal a muscular global response to Iran's crackdown on anti-government protesters appeared to backfire on Friday (Jan 5) as members of the UN Security Council instead used a special session called by the United States to lecture the U.S. ambassador on the proper objective of the body and to reaffirm support for the Iran nuclear agreement.

"It is a powerful exhibition of fearless people who have become so fed up with their oppressive government that they are willing to risk their lives in protest".

"We must not be silent".

"The United States is abusing the platform of the Security Council".

"Tomorrow the U.N. Security Council will discuss the troubling and risky situation in Iran", Haley said in a statement issued Thursday evening, adding that it was "a matter of fundamental human rights for the Iranian people, but it is also a matter of global peace and security".

In her remarks, Ms Haley said the United States would remain steadfastly behind the Iranian protesters. Until the meeting began at 3pm, it was not even certain whether Ms Haley would be able to secure the votes needed to call the session to order.

"The Iranian regime is now on notice".

Swedish Foreign Minister Margot Wallstrom came under fire this week after she spoke with the national media about Sweden's "great concern and dismay" about the events in Iran, but expressed skepticism about the need for a meeting at the United Nations.

US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley speaks for a bid to renew an global inquiry into chemical weapons attacks in Syria, during a meeting of the UN Security Council at the United Nations headquarters in NY.

"The Iranian dictatorship is trying to do what it always does, which is to say that the protests were designed by enemies. And we know the truth", Haley said. How has Iran's government responded to the economic concerns raised by demonstrators?

"The people of Iran are rising up".

But there was evidence of a mini-revolt brewing within the Security Council chamber, not only among traditional adversaries like Russian Federation and China, but also among close allies like France and Sweden.

US President Donald Trump had refrained from calling for violence or disruptive acts in Iran but had expressed "such respect for the people of Iran as they try to take back their corrupt government", also pledging "great support from the United States at the appropriate time". "Iran's domestic affairs have nothing to do with the United Nations Security Council's role".

If the USA does not garner the votes to hold the meeting, it will bolster the US argument that the United Nations fails to speak out on human rights.

Some Iranians blame reformist President Hassan Rouhani for Iran's woes, saying he's failed to deliver the jobs and foreign investment promised by the 2015 nuclear deal, which relaxed worldwide sanctions.
