Planes collide at Toronto airport, causing fire, evacuation

Passengers filmed screaming as plane wing explodes during collision at airport

Two airliners collided on the tarmac of Toronto's Pearson International Airport on Saturday morning, causing a small fire.

Swissport, the ground crew that was towing the Sunwing plane, apologized for the accident, but maintained that it was operating under all safety regulations.

Westjet Flight 2425 from Cancun, Mexico, carrying 168 passengers and six crew members had just landed in the Toronto airport when the collision happened.

Before fleeing, passengers on board the WestJet plane filmed the chaos.

A spokeswoman said the WestJet passengers were evacuated from the aircraft and were safely in the terminal and clearing customs shortly after the collision.

'Emergency crews were on hand and responded immediately, ' Westjet said in a statement.

The video shows the flames coming out of the plane's wing.

Luckily, the Sunwing plane that was being towed by the ground handling service provider at that time had no passenger on board.

The fire was quickly extinguished by emergency responders at Canada's largest airport.

Airport officials said that flight operations "have not been significantly affected by the incident", although the airport was struggling due to plunging temperatures that reached almost -20 degrees Celsius (-4 Fahrenheit) overnight on Friday.

'Out of nowhere there was an audible crunch and the plane rocked slightly, ' reports CBC News.

"The plane backed up into us and after a couple of seconds, it ignited", said Pavlović.

Investigators are reportedly gathering information about the incident, including "how many ground crew were present, how many are required [and] what the procedures are for this type of maneuver", a Transportation Safety Board of Canada spokesperson told CBC. Everyone was a little shocked and kind of chuckling at the situation'.
