Can California preserve net neutrality? Lawmakers pledge to try

Top tech lobby joins legal battle to keep 'net neutrality'

Opponents of the FCC's effort to roll back net neutrality rules have gained enough co-sponsors for a bill that would force a Senate vote on the matter.

Sen. Edward Markey (D-Mass.) then launched an effort to reverse the FCC's repeal via the Congressional Review Act.

Internet Association president Michael Beckerman said the FCC action voted December 14 "defies the will of a bipartisan majority of Americans and fails to preserve a free and open internet". Claire McCaskill (D-MO) became the 30th name on the proposed bill today. In the meantime, net neutrality supporters are also pursuing litigation and state laws.

But net neutrality backers have argued that clear rules are needed to prevent internet service providers from blocking or throttling services or websites for competitive reasons, and that the rollback would increase the power of a few dominant providers to control what users see online. Bernie Sanders, an independent who caucuses with the Democratic Party. Given that Republicans have nearly unanimously supported the FCC's new rules, the prospects for the CRA are dim.

Although Democrats now have the votes to force the resolution to a vote in the Senate, they have much steeper barriers to getting it enacted.

The fact that no Republicans have signed onto the resolution means it's likely to be defeated in a floor vote.

Still, Free Press and others are pushing forward, noting that the net neutrality rules are widely popular.

The U.S. Senate will hold a vote on net neutrality - albeit a symbolic one. The commission did adopt new rules requiring that internet providers disclose the way they handle traffic, but net neutrality advocates say that they are insufficient.

"Millions of people from across the political spectrum fought hard to win the Title II net neutrality protections that the FCC just callously slashed at the behest of telecom lobbyists", Greer said in a statement. To do that, the bill will regulate business practices and use net neutrality as a condition in state contracts, cable franchise agreements and agreements that let companies place wireless broadband equipment on utility poles, his office said in a statement. Before the commission voted on the repeal, some of America's biggest tech companies, Facebook and Google in particular, took a back seat during public protests over the issue.

The Nebraska Telecommunications Association, which said it would study Morfeld's bill before taking a position on it, circulated a white paper among its 30 member companies past year describing the 2015 rules as trying "to fit a square peg in a round hole".
