Jacksonville's defence shuts down Buffalo to reach Divisional playoff game

Buffalo Bills vs Jacksonville Jaguars NFL playoffs: Running game and stern defence the key in AFC Wild Card Round clash

First-year Jaguars head coach Doug Marrone has his first playoff win as a coach - much to Buffalo's dismay.

The prize for Jacksonville should they beat Buffalo is a trip to Pittsburgh again in the Divisional Round, and it's the last thing the Steelers want to see.

Buffalo - who suffered the longest barren spell without post-season action across all four major sports in the United States before this season - had not featured in the play-offs since losing 22-16 at this stage in 1999, and had not reached the Divisional Round since 1995.

Marrone used an option in his contract to opt out after the Bills changed ownership after the 2014 season. He was promoted to interim head coach for the final two games of the 2016 season after Gus Bradley was sacked and got the full-time job in January. There were questions about whether he'd play after he had to be carted off the field in Week 17, but he's doing just fine, thank you.

The Jaguars were finally able to move the ball on the final drive of the half. Bortles led Jacksonville to 84 yards on 22 plays.

McCoy finished the regular season as the league's fourth-best rusher at 1,138 yards and six touchdowns on 287 carries. But receiver Kelvin Benjamin was called for offensive pass interference in the end zone.

The two teams, which combined for less than 500 yards total offense in the game, traded field goals late in the second quarter and went into the locker room at the half tied 3-3.

NOTES: Buffalo S Micah Hyde (concussion) and CB Tre'Davious White (cramps) left the game.

A drab first quarter finished scoreless and the second quarter almost followed suit as both sides started nervously before a fantastic interception by Jaguars cornerback Aaron Colvin gave the match some spark.
