Federal Bureau of Investigation accuses Missouri man who stopped train of being white supremacist
Authorities say a 26-year-old neo-Nazi who not only was a part of the Charlottesville protestors but has reportedly spoken about "killing black people" is now facing terrorism charges after being arrested for pulling the emergency brake on an Amtrak train in October of 2017.
Last October, a train conductor traveling through Furnas County, Nebraska noticed the train braking, and found Wilson "playing with the controls" in the engineer room.
Passengers on the train also directed authorities to Wilson's backpack, which contained three more speedloaders, a box of ammunition, a hammer, a fixed blade knife, tin snips, scissors, a tape measure, and a respirator-style mask similar, court documents state. Federal Bureau of Investigation agents searching Wilson's home found 15 guns, a handmade shield, tactical vest, 11 AR-15 rifle ammunition magazines, a drum magazine for a rifle, ammunition, white supremacy documents, gunpowder and ammunition-reloading supplies.
The conductor, and others, subdued Wilson, then held him and waited for deputies from Furnas and Harlan counties to arrive in Oxford, 23 miles southwest of Holdrege, where the eastbound California Zephyr with about 175 people aboard stopped.
"In an interview with the FBI, Wilson's cousin Andrew Olney said that Wilson had joined an "'alt right' neo-Nazi group" that he found while researching white supremacy forums on the internet, according to the affidavit. The FBI believes he traveled with this group to the Charlottesville rally.
The acquaintance also said Wilson "has expressed an interest in "killing black people" ... especially during the protests in St. Louis". He later was found competent to proceed, according to court records.
In an affidavit, FBI Special Agent Monte Czaplewski said there was probable cause to believe that electronic devices and firearms possessed by Wilson "have been used for or obtained in anticipation of engaging in or planning to engage in criminal offenses against the United States".
He was subdued by Amtrak workers and arrested while approximately 175 passengers sat in the dark after the train stopped at 2 a.m. The conductor said that Wilson first appeared to be lucid and then started "saying insane things about going to the moon".
A relative told investigators that Wilson had been "acting odd".
They also said he had "several" legally purchased firearms, but eventually turned over 15 weapons, including an illegal fully automatic rifle and another illegally converted rifle, court documents say. The family member also said Wilson traveled with members of the group to the protests in Charlottesville, Virginia, which Federal Bureau of Investigation officials believed to be the "Unite the Right" rally in August. The car's license plate was traced to Wilson, who tried to turn himself in to police but would not say what he had done. By the time Wilson was located, the victim couldn't be found, so he was not charged, the Federal Bureau of Investigation affidavit says.
He said Wilson normally carries a.38 caliber handgun and that he had 20-25 guns, including an AK 47, AR-15s and an M-4 rifle. According to Olney, Wilson and his white supremacist group were also responsible for putting up "whites only" signs at businesses in an unknown location. He was arrested December 23 after the complaint against him was filed in federal court in Nebraska.
The incident unfolded October 23 when Wilson allegedly breached a secure area of an Amtrak train as it was passing through a rural area near Oxford, Nebraska, and applied the emergency break, bringing the train to a rapid halt in what authorities said was an attempt to derail and wreck the train.
