Sears to close 24 auto centers

A sign announcing the store will be closing hangs above a Sears store

Sears is scheduled to close its store in the Berkshire Mall in Lanesborough in three weeks, but the bloodletting at the once vibrant national retailer isn't over yet.

Sears Holdings announced Thursday that it will close another 103 stores-both Kmart and Sears units-in 2018.

Sears and Kmart have been losing billions of dollars and closing stores for years.

In the NY area, the Sears located in Hicksville, on Long Island, is expected to close, as well as one in Toms River, New Jersey.

The Sanford Kmart on South Horner Boulevard will close its doors for the final time in April.

The closures announced on Thursday were in addition to 63 stores Sears is closing this month, having also shuttered 330 stores in 2017. Sears wouldn't say how employees will be affected, but did say the majority of the jobs are part-time positions, and eligible associates will receive severance.

Merchandise liquidation sales will begin as early as January 12. The Sanford Sears Hometown Store, located at 2534 Lee Ave., is not among the list of locations set to close, according to a news release issued by Sears Holdings.

Sears Holdings had a better-than-expected fiscal third quarter; the company reported a net loss of $558 million compared to a net loss of $748 million for the third quarter of 2016 (an improvement of $190 million). Sears was one of the original anchor stores at the Berkshire Mall, which opened in 1988.
