Everton's Ross Barkley set for Chelsea medical

Chelsea are set to take their season's spending past the £200m mark after making a £15m bid for Everton midfielder Ross Barkley.

Barkley - who has missed all season with a hamstring problem - is now back to full fitness and will be ready to play as soon as he completes the move.

Chelsea is racing to rush through a deal for Everton star Ross Barkley so that they can ensure that Tottenham doesn't beat them there first.

The midfielder was close to moving to Stamford Bridge on transfer deadline day in the summer, but a move broke down in the final hours, with speculation at the time that he changed his mind during the medical.

With Barkley's current contract set to expire at the end of this season, Everton look to have made a decision to cash in on him now rather than allow him to leave on a free transfer in the summer.

Barkley rejected a new contract offer from the Merseyside club last season and told former manager Ronald Koeman he wanted to leave for a new challenge. There is hope that Barkley will add versatility in the squad in central midfield, as a No.10 or as a wide player in the front 3, making him the ideal player to fit in Conte's 3-4-3 and 3-5-2 formations.

Some of the Everton fans who were disappointed in his decision not to sign a new contract a year ago will likely be happy to see him leave.

Barkley's exit will bring an end to his association with Everton, the club he joined as an 11-year-old and represented more than 150 times.
