Amazon Alexa will soon control microwave ovens

Amazon Brings Cooking Controls To Alexa With Smart Home Skill API

Hisense's Alexa-powered TVs will also connect to music services and other smart home products, turning the TV into a smart home hub. "Amazon probably wants the Echo device family to stand on its own as a consumer electronics line, while supporting the greater mission of succeeding as an online retailer". It'll also spread availability beyond the US-only skills that the new system will ship with now, to other countries.

Amazon is investing in June Life, the company that created the June Oven, which uses voice commands to cook your food in an easy and convenient manner. Instead of pressing multiple buttons to enable advanced microwave features, your customers can now use their voices.

First, the updated Smart Home Skill API will support microwave ovens. The interfaces are designed for future extensibility as support for more cooking devices becomes available the company has revealed.

Amazon and Google are expected to remain the leaders with their Echo and Home devices, but will feel some heat from new entrants to the market.

"Whirlpool has created an Alexa skill leveraging these new cooking capabilities in the Smart Home Skill API for its connected microwaves and expects to launch it soon".

According to Amazon, the AI assistant will offer customers a break from, er, "traditional and often confusing microwave experience by enabling them to bark commands at the appliance such as "Alexa, defrost three pounds of chicken" or "Alexa, microwave for 50 seconds on high".

GE Appliances, Kenmore, LG, and Samsung are also working on integrating Alexa's cooking capabilities into their smart ovens and appliances.

The catch, as you might imagine, is that your ovens and microwaves need to support this feature, and nearly all "smart" versions now don't.

Amazon Echo owners spend 66% more than average customers of the e-commerce giant, helping the company to sell its voice-enabled devices for a lower price, per a study by Consumer Intelligence Research provided to Mobile Marketer. Even with current technology, it's generally already quicker to set an oven or microwave by hand than it is to call out directions.
