Hoda Kotb Named 'Today' Co-Anchor, Replacing Matt Lauer

Hoda Kotb will be the permanent replacement for Matt Lauer on the "Today" show, serving as co-anchor, NBC announced Tuesday.

"Sounds like you want a steak, not an anchor", Roker commented, quoting the tweet in question.

News Chairman Andy Lack announced that Kotb will co-anchor the first two hours of the show, according to the network.

Kotb will continue to co-host the show's fourth hour with Kathie Lee Gifford.

"There's no one I'd rather be sitting next to in 2018 than you", Kotb said. "Let's give her a round of applause", Guthrie said, grinning.

"I'm pinching myself", Kotb said. "They have an undeniable connection with each other and most importantly, with viewers, a hallmark of 'TODAY'".

In this November 29, 2017, photo, Savannah Guthrie, right, and Hoda Kotb appear with the Rockettes during the 85th annual Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree lighting ceremony in NY.

Kotb previously stepped in as a replacement for Lauer, who was sacked in late November of previous year for what NBC called "inappropriate sexual behavior in the workplace". "I think that we should send some medics to Alexandria, Va., where my mom has likely fainted".

Multiple outlets have noted that after Lauer's departure, with Kotb taking his place at the anchor desk, Today's ratings didn't show any sign of a drop - instead, they surged higher. She joined NBC News in 1998, first working as a "Dateline" correspondent.

Lauer responded the day after he was terminated by sharing his own statement, which said, "There are no words to express my sorrow and regret for the pain I have caused others by words and actions". The timing is important for NBC, because Today will get a burst of attention next month with the Winter Olympics. Indeed, Kotb is a beloved figure, and her presence will be warmly regarded (although perhaps not quite to the degree as an Ann Curry return would have been, yet Curry's probably no longer interested).
