US Customs computers outage causes delays for airport travelers

Long lines of people waiting to go through customs at Miami International Airport due to a reported computer issue

Immigration desk computers at various USA airports went down for about two hours on Monday, causing wait times for worldwide travelers that were longer than normal, Customs and Border Protection said. According to CBP, the outage began at 7:30 p.m. and ended at approximately 9:30 p.m.

Photos posted on social networks by stranded passengers showed long lines at New York's JFK and Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson.

US Customs and Immigration computers went down at various airports around the US yesterday, causing some havoc for travelers returning from holidays.

One person tweeted that Miami Airport is "total chaos" while another said the lengthy lines at JFK "are horrible". "At this time, there is no indication the service disruption was malicious in nature", Customs and Border Protection spokesperson Jennifer Gabris said in the statement.

CBP took immediate action to address the technology disruption.

Other airports, including Denver International Airport, also said they were affected.

CBP has not given any further explanation of what caused the disruption in the system.

CBP officers continued to process worldwide passengers using alternative procedures, but the agency acknowledged that travelers at some ports of entry experienced longer than usual wait times.
