If you suspect your water meter or service line is frozen, you should call your local utility department to assess the situation. This expansion breaks the pipe causing water to leak.

Apply heat to the section of pipe using an electric heating pad wrapped around the pipe, an electric hair dryer, a portable space heater (kept away from flammable materials), or by wrapping pipes with towels soaked in hot water. We encourage customers to take the following precautions to reduce freezing or bursting pipes, as well as any damage to the water meter. Water inside the meter can freeze, damaging it and requiring replacement of the entire unit at the homeowners' expense!
