Flu now widespread in 36 states, according to CDC

"When you can recognize the flu in yourself, you can recognize it in coworkers and family and help prevent the spread".

IL is among the states the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says is seeing "widespread" flu activity.

A Monterey County resident recently died from the flu, the Monterey County Health Department announced Thursday.

The vaccine for the A H3N2 is predicted by the Centers for Disease Control is about 35 percent effective and efficacy of the other three strains is expected to be higher.

The ADPH suggests that everyone 6 months and older receive the "quadrivalent vaccine", the flu vaccine that protects against four influenza strains, because one of the strains in circulation in Alabama (Type B/Yamagata) is only included in the quadrivalent vaccine.

Based on numbers provided by the state health department, the flu typically peaks around the third week of February.

Since October, nearly 3,500 vaccines have been given at 25 different flu vaccination clinics throughout the city, including a drive-through vaccination clinic. The virus can also survive on surfaces outside the human body for hours.

The flu is already gripping 36 states and has killed at least 70 people in the U.S., according to data released by the CDC on Friday.

"It's a little disheartening to hear that, but with flu ramping up in December and January, we still have a long way to go", he said. That's up from 84 cases the previous weeks.

Overall vaccine effectiveness against all circulating flu viruses last season was 39 percent, according to the CDC. "This is particularly important for pregnant women and people with chronic health conditions", said DPH Medical Director Dr. Awele Maduka-Ezeh.

If you suspect or know you have the flu, you should avoid touching or coming into close contact with others to prevent them from becoming sick. "If anything positive comes from this tragic loss, we hope it will be that people understand that flu is a serious illness".
