Pot-smoking on the rise among United States pregnant women

Marijuana use among pregnant women is on the rise, according to a new study.

The number of women who smoke marijuana during pregnancy has significantly increased in recent years, according to a recent study. Cannabis use in pregnant teens under 18 increased from 12.5 percent to 21.8 percent, while use in women 18 to 24 increased from 9.8 percent to 19 percent.

There was one important caveat to the survey: Urine samples were taken at eight weeks of gestation, so pot use might have occurred before numerous women realized they were pregnant.

"Earlier broadly illustrative investigations have discovered that the commonness of cannabis use among USA grown-up pregnant ladies has expanded after some time; in any case, these investigations have excluded target measures of biochemically checked pot utilize and likely think little of the commonness", said lead examine creator Kelly Young and senior creator Dr. Nancy Goler, both of Kaiser Permanente Northern California in Oakland.

More than half of all Americans reported having tried marijuana at some point in their lives, and about 22 percent of those qualify as regular users.

Prenatal marijuana use also increased among women of all ages.

Researchers noted that the study is limited to self-reported surveys and likely underestimates pot use "leaving the scope of the problem unclear".

California was the fist state in the USA to legalize medical marijuana in 1996.

Researchers examined screening data that encompassed some 280,000 women who were tested between 2009 and 2016.

As it stands, using marijuana while pregnant appears to be a gamble.

Citing studies, the ACOG warns that "children who were exposed to marijuana in utero had lower scores on tests of visual problem solving, visual-motor coordination, and visual analysis than children who were not exposed to marijuana in utero".

However, for those women who denied using marijuana but had a positive urine test, it's impossible to tell if she had used the drug after she realized she was pregnant.

"Obstetrician-gynecologists should be discouraged from prescribing or suggesting the use of marijuana for medicinal purposes during preconception, pregnancy, and lactation", The ACOG committee wrote in an opinion.

And women may even be using marijuana after they took the survey-on goal.
