Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton remain more admired man and woman in US

The overhaul of the tax code that became law last week in the US threatens economic relations with other countries

Clinton, who won the national popular vote during the 2016 presidential election by about 2.9-million ballots, though lost in the all-important Electoral College to Trump, beat former First Lady Michelle Obama in the poll 9 per cent to 7 per cent.

Gallup explains that Trump's unpopularity is likely what's holding him back from winning the most admired distinction.

Despite keeping a relatively low profile since leaving the White House in January, former President Barack Obama edged out his successor, President Donald Trump, to retain his title as Gallup's "most admired" man for the 10th straight year, the polling group announced Wednesday.

Seventeen per cent of the Americans who polled said Obama was the man they admired most, down from 22 per cent past year.

Following Michelle Obama in the top 10 for women were Oprah Winfrey, Elizabeth Warren, Angela Merkel, Queen Elizabeth, Condoleeza Rice, Melania Trump, Nikki Haley, Kate Middleton, and Beyonce.

Gallup has been asking about the most admired man since 1946 and the most admired woman since 1948.

Obama retaining his title this year is a bit unusual.

The former secretary of state has held the title of "most admired" woman for a total of 22 times.

Gallup added that while Clinton won by a smaller margin than usual she has been named the most admired woman (or man) more than anyone in the poll's history.

The percentage of Trump admirers also dipped from 15% last year to 14% this year.

However, Gallup is uncertainly whether she'll continue to come out on top. Former first lady Eleanor Roosevelt received the second highest number of wins with 13 nominations.

Clinton "remains arguably more prominent than other contenders", Jones wrote in a blog post announcing the findings.

The polling research company talked to 1,049 adults throughout the country between December 4 and 11.
