Does Apple make older iPhones slower to force upgrades?

So what Apple is doing instead is controlling the processor speed of older phones, to prevent the entire device from failing by drawing too much power.

Yet on Wednesday, Apple acknowledged that it does limit iPhone performance with new iOS software updates, according to multiple media outlets. Because of this factor, older iPhones with older batteries could be limited in their usage.

It's a problem a lot of Apple users face - older iPhones seeming to slowing down when newer models and software updates are released.

It absolutely doesn't help silence accusers and escape public ridicule that the controversial move is dubbed a "feature", released previous year for the iPhone 6, 6s and SE to "smooth out the instantaneous peaks only when needed to prevent the device from unexpectedly shutting down during these conditions". By quietly adopting it as a fix for highly publicized shutdown issues, then coming clean only after the cold hard data pointed in a clear direction, Cupertino risked feeding the old "planned obsolescence" conspiracy theory. Poole found that Apple does seem to downgrade the performance of its iPhones' processors (or CPUs) after their batteries hit a certain number of recharge cycles. We've now extended that feature to iPhone 7 with iOS 11.2, and plan to add support for other products in the future.

Because Apple can't stop batteries from getting older and degrading, it uses a power management feature in order to extend the life of an aging iPhone and its battery.

On the other hand, more information from Apple about the change would have avoided this PR nightmare.

'Our goal is to deliver the best experience for customers, which includes overall performance and prolonging the life of their devices. Apple will do so for $79 (you can do it yourself for less, but with more risk), but some have called on Apple to replace the batteries for free.

"In essence, this is a matter of the battery not being able to perform, and the device having to compensate", said McCall. There's no easy way to replace the battery yourself, and trying to do so could void your warranty.

Apple said older batteries can cause iPhones to shut down without warning. So even if Apple's reasoning is accurate, the company looks suspicious by not being upfront and transparent about this particular feature. Also let us know which model of the iPhone you have.
