California Highway Patrol Officer Dies In Christmas Eve Crash

Good Samaritans first on scene during Christmas Eve crash that killed CHP officer in Hayward

Camilleri and Velasquez, who was seated in the driver's seat, were participating in the department's Maximum Enforcement Patrol to ensure the safety of motorists during the holiday season.

The California Highway Patrol says a 22-year-old driver who struck a CHP patrol auto, killing an officer, was under the influence of alcohol and possibly marijuana while returning from a party.

CHP says the driver had been drinking and was on drugs. Officials said Camilleri's partner Jonathan Velasquez, was sitting in the driver's seat of their patrol vehicle at the time of the crash. Camilleri leaves behind a wife and three children.

Nacke said the driver who hit them, a 22-year-old Hayward man, was hospitalized with significant injuries.

Investigators believe the man's auto was traveling at a high rate of speed when he crashed into the SUV, causing significant damage and leaving the CHP vehicle a crumpled pile of metal.

Hayward CHP area officer Andrew Camilleri and his partner were stopped on I-880 southbound at the Winston on ramp when a driver drifted off the road and struck the right rear area of the auto.

Officials from the CHP Golden Gate confirmed the "tragic line of duty death" via Twitter on Christmas morning.

Chief Ernest Sanchez said.

"Today, we lost not only a hero, but a son, a brother, a husband and a father to a senseless act and an irresponsible decision", said Capt. Tim Pearson, who commands the CHP's Hayward area office. "We join his family, friends and the entire California Highway Patrol in mourning his death and honoring his sacrifice". He was treated at a hospital and has since been released.
