Environment Canada predicts white Christmas, issues special weather statement

Southern Ontario expected to receive 5 to 10 cm of snow by Christmas morning

It will be a white Christmas in Southwestern Ontario.

Rapidly accumulating snow could make travel hard over some locations.

The snowfall is expected to end Monday morning. Somewhat heavier snow is likely in some areas, especially in the Greater Toronto Area where a snowfall warning is in effect.

In a weather warning issued Sunday, Environment Canada said a pacific frontal system will move onto Vancouver Island today.

As a result, motorists should anticipate hazardous road conditions, and prepare for longer travel times over the holidays.

It will start in the afternoon, with the bulk of the snow falling Sunday night. Wind gusts could reach 40 miles per hour by afternoon on Christmas. Meanwhile, cold artcic air is already in place along B.C.'s coast.

Although temperatures on parts of the Prairies are expected to moderate somewhat during the day on Sunday, bouts of extreme cold will continue through next week, Environment Canada says.

By Monday morning, we could see general snowfall amounts of 5 to 10 cm - with some areas getting hit with 15 cm.

There have been a handful of "perfect Christmases" - when more than two centimetres of snow have accumulated by Christmas Day - in the Lower Mainland since 1955.
