The First 5G Specs Have Been Approved By 3GPP

3GPP declares first 5G NR spec complete

"Reaching this milestone enables the next phase of equipment availability and movement to interoperability testing and early 5G availability", said AT&T, one of T-Mobile's big rivals in introducing 5G to the USA market. Standards group 3GPP recently agreed upon the first official specification for 5G New Radio which will become the foundation for the majority of 5G-enabled products in the coming year.

The members of the 3GPP now have to approve the specs for Standalone 5G, which will replace the current 4G LTE networks. "We succeeded in demonstrating the 5G global standard so we have become able to take the initiative in the commercialization of the technology by using this equipment in Euljiro and Bundang". Add on top of this emerging, video-intensive use cases like the augmented reality and virtual reality, the proliferation of mobile broadband in vehicles, the always-connected PC, and much more, and you quickly get a sense for why 5G NR's increased performance and efficiency was needed sooner than later.

"Having global 3GPP 5G NR standard by 2017 is one of key milestones to bring 5G into early commercial service in 2019", SK Telecom head of ICT R&D center Jinhyo Park said. These layers have been standardized in the first specifications as the building blocks of 5G NR.

5G global standardization is expected to be completed by 2019.

The quest to make 5G a reality has just taken a very important step forward.

While the specs themselves won't be announced until next week, they're said to offer support for the full range of low (600MHz, 700MHz), mid-range (3.5GHz) and high-frequency, millimeter wave (50GHz) spectrum. "KT has actively participated in the standardization of 3GPP 5G through the submission of hundreds of exclusive technical contributions and hundreds of joint contributions".

The first 5G NR specification was completed as part of 3GPP Release 15 and marks an essential milestone towards full-scale development of 5G.

The race to 5G communication is on between cellular carriers.
