Blaze at London Zoo as 70 firefighters tackle flames

Firefighters are at the scene

A spokesman for the zoo confirmed the death of Misha, and said that it was not yet possible to say what had happened to the animals unaccounted for.

A dog walker said: "I could smell the fire from Camden Town, I thought it was going to be a huge blaze but it seems like they've got it, so I'm quite pleased".

"Those staff who were first on the scene have been treated on site for shock and smoke inhalation".

The zoo will remain closed on Saturday until further notice.

A spokesperson for LFB said: "Approximately half of an adventure cafe and shop, which also contains an animal petting area, was alight".

TV footage from the scene showed the Adventure Cafe and shop to be badly damaged. We will continue to monitor them over the coming days.

At its worst, the flames spread to a shop and at one point, 70 firefighters were on the scene battling the fire, which sent one person to the hospital.

"We are all naturally devastated by this, but are immensely grateful to the fire brigade, who reacted quickly to the situation to bring the fire under control", the statement expressed.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.

A team of 70 fire fighters and ten engines spent two hours tackling the blaze after a 999 call was made at 6.08am.

On Saturday morning, a massive fire broke out at the ZSL London Zoo.

"We will aim to re-open when we know it is safe to do so for animals, staff and visitors". It is set to reopen Sunday.
