Apple says older iPhones slowed due to battery issues

Apple Sued Slow Your Roll ... Not Our Old iPhones!!!

You're Not Crazy: Apple Confirms It Slows Your Smartphone's Lifespan Apple has revealed it is deliberately slowing the performance of some older iPhones.

But some owners prefer faster performance.

"Last year, we have implemented a feature for the iPhone 6, iPhone 6S and iPhone in order to stabilize the peak energy when necessary, and to prevent the out-line of the device under these conditions". The lithium-ion batteries are less able to respond to peaks in demand in case of cold weather, low battery charge, or aging with time, which may lead to an unexpected closure of the unit to protect electronic components.

Geekbench developer John Poole has mapped out performance for the iPhone 6S and iPhone 7 over time, and has come to the conclusion that Apple's iOS 10.2.1 and 11.2.0 updates introduce this throttling for different devices. iOS 10.2.1 is particularly relevant, as this update was created to reduce random shutdown issues for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6S.

The company, which expects its phones to last for three years, has now said it does slow down some models as they age, but only because the phones' battery performance diminishes over time.

"(But) it is a trade-off. After running a series of tests on the 6S and 7, Geekbench concluded that the problem is widespread and unlikely to be the product of natural wear and tear on an aging battery. Proof: My iPhone 6 was bought 3years ago and recently got really slow.

Apple has further delved into the issue of lithium-ion batteries on its website, which have a limited life span.

The widely believed theory that the company intentionally slows down older iPhones is true.

The issue appears to be rectified by getting affected batteries replaced by Apple, says Geekbench, but iPhone users may conclude that their handset is out of date and that they need to buy a new one.

"Our goal is to deliver the best experience for customers, which includes overall performance and prolonging the life of their devices", a spokesperson for Apple said.

"It all makes sense", they wrote. "Your own battery's lifespan will vary depending on how you use your device as well as the settings you choose for it". It will be applied to other Apple devices in the future. "That doesn't engender trust", added developer and blogger Nick Heer. Apple charges $79 to replace batteries not covered under the phone's warranty.
