Police Releases Official Statement Regarding Passing Of SHINee's Jonghyun

Kim Jong-hyun, the lead singer of world's biggest K-pop band SHINee, has died in an apparent suicide, South Korean police said today.

Kim, better known by his stage name Jonghyun, was found unconscious in a rented studio apartment in Cheongdam-dong, Southern Seoul on Monday.

"His sister was first to call the police assuming that he might commit suicide", said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitive subject.

According to the Yonhap News Agency, authorities believe Jonghyun (as he was commonly referred as) died from inhaling toxic fumes - police discovered coal briquettes burning on a frying pan at the apartment.

SHINee have been dubbed the "Princes of K-pop" - a musical genre that started in South Korea and that mixes electronic, hip hop, pop, rock, and R&B music. "Tell me I did well", and "final farewell". Kim also had a successful solo career as a singer-songwriter.

His death sent shockwaves through K-pop fans with social media flooded by messages of mourning.

The group were formed in 2008 and debuted months later, with Jonghyun beginning to write songs for the idols the following year. His last public appearance was at a solo concert titled "Inspired" on December 9 to 10 in Seoul, and he was scheduled to hold concerts with SHINee members in Tokyo and Osaka in February, Yonhap said.
