Vivo Likely To Beat Samsung, Apple To Introduce Display Integrated Fingerprint Sensor

Vivo and not Samsung to launch first phone with an in-screen fingerprint sensor in 2018

As the press release made several mentions of a "bezel-free infinity display", some thought it would first appear in a Samsung device, but it will actually be in a Vivo phone.

Earlier this week, Synaptics - the company responsible for handling the touch input on millions of laptop trackpads and smartphone screens - announced that it has started mass production with its first optical in-display fingerprint sensors. With rumors suggesting that Samsung's upcoming Galaxy S9 will keep the fingerprint sensor on the back of the phone and Apple unlikely to roll out an iPhone X successor until the fall, Vivo seems like it will beat other smartphone makers to the punch with a sensor embedded right into the phone's screen.

New details have also emerged about Synaptics' technology, with Forbes contributor Patrick Moorhead reporting that the in-display solution relies on a 0.7mm-thick CMOS image sensor, and that it's somewhere between two to three times less expensive than the Face ID infrared facial recognition system of Apple's iPhone X - the latter detail being perhaps not much of a surprise, given the thousand-dollar price tag of that phone.

Apple, meanwhile, chose to ditch an actual fingerprint scanner altogether with the iPhone X. The iPhone X is Apple's first iPhone to not have Touch ID. In order for it to work, the finger has to be illuminated, so that the fingerprint scanner can read the reflections of the finger scan.

While this is slightly different from how we unlock our phones now, Moorhead expects Vivo to improve the experience by only requiring users to lift to wake the device, so at that point, they can just place their finger on the glass to unlock it, without the need to press any other buttons.

"The Clear ID experience was fast and simple", McDonald said in an opinion piece. The company was ranked fifth in IDC's Q1 2017 report, as pointed out by The Verge. The firm said a top 5 phone manufacturer would use its technology in a "Tier 1" handset next year. Earlier in the year, Qualcomm revealed to Digital Trends that it expected in-screen fingerprint sensors to launch in consumer products beginning in summer 2018.

Samsung has been hard at work to implement an in-screen fingerprint sensor on its high-end flagship phones.

Vivo aims to beat both companies to the punch with its new "Clear ID" fingerprint scanner.
