Apple Awards $390 Million to Face ID Tech Company Finisar

Apple Invests In Finisar

The award is part of Apple's pledge to spend its $1 billion Advanced Manufacturing Fund investing in us companies engaged in high-tech manufacturing. According to Apple, the cash infusion will help create 500 new high skill jobs at the manufacturing plant.

Apple said it would buy 10 times more VCSELs than were previously made worldwide in the fourth quarter, compared with a year earlier.

Finisar will use the funds to transform a shuttered, 700,000-square-foot manufacturing plant in Texas to a facility developing vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) chips.

So it makes sense that Apple would need to increase production of the chips and components that power it.

Apple has invested $390 million in Finisar, a manufacturer of optical communications components. These power numerous newer features Apple has introduced in the last few generations of iPhone, such as the proximity-sensing capabilities of AirPods and the True-Depth camera on the iPhone X.

"VCSELs power some of the most sophisticated technology we've ever developed and we're thrilled to partner with Finisar over the next several years to push the boundaries of VCSEL technology and the applications they enable", Apple's Chief Operating Officer Jeff Williams said in a statement. Finisar expects the Sherman facility to begin shipping new VCSELs by the second half of 2018.

Finisar's shares, which rose as much as 30 percent on Apple's announcement, pared gains to trade up 22 percent following the clarification. "Consistent with Apple's commitment to the environment, the company intends to procure enough renewable energy to cover all of its Apple manufacturing in the United States". In May, Corning received the first award, of $200 million, to expand its glass processing.

Finisar's CEO chimed in as well.

This new investment will no doubt help boost Finisar's business even more and help the Sherman, Texas, economy.

"The amount referred to by Apple represents anticipated future business between the companies over a period of time", Finisar said in a filing. "The City of Sherman has invested significantly in improved infrastructure and amenities, and that's translated into an unparalleled quality of life".

The deal with Finisar demonstrates Apple's ability to play king-maker among component suppliers.
