Mobile gets into paid TV market

T-Mobile is now looking to get into TV service area.

Mobile carrier T-Mobile will launch a nationwide over-the-top streaming video service in 2018, built on technology from Layer3 TV, which it is acquiring. The third-largest US telecom company by subscribers, T-Mobile claims to have the country's fastest LTE data network. Streaming services such as Sling TV and DirecTV are increasingly popular and are gaining more traction everyday. The company, started by industry veterans Jeff Binder and Dave Fellows, has marketed itself as a next-generation cable service, offering integration of online content with linear, improved customer service and its own proprietary network for higher quality video.

Layer3, which moved its headquarters from Boston to Denver in 2014, began offering TV service in Chicago past year, and has since expanded to areas including Washington D.C., Los Angeles and Longmont. It will be interesting to see how T-Mobile plans to bring its customers onboard to subscriber to the service.

Legere said T-Mobile's video service would not require any contracts, would be watchable on every connected device, would combine traditional channels and streaming services like Netflix, and would be available to preview or buy in any of T-Mobile's retail stores.

T-Mobile has billed the service as a breakthrough for people who "love their TV, but they hate their TV providers". There will also be social aspects that will be integrated with the service.
