Google's Most Searched Terms for 2017: Hurricane Irma, Matt Lauer

Apple’s iPhone 8 is the most searched smartphone in 2017

Surprisingly, disgraced Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein, whose alleged sexual misconduct inspired the #MeToo movement empowering women to break their silence on sexual harassment, was missing from the top trending Google searches.

While the iPhone 8 appears to beat out the iPhone X, numerous searches for the iPhone 8 were likely for the iPhone X as the media was referring to Apple's flagship as the iPhone 8 until shortly before its unveiling. The most searched television shows included "13 Reasons Why", "Game of Thrones" and "This Is Us".

You can check out a breakdown of the most popular Google searches by country here.

Lauer, the disgraced former host of NBC's Today show, also appears in the number four spot for overall global searches (number two in USA searches).

The Las Vegas shooting that killed 58 and wounded hundreds more was fifth. The iPhone 8 and iPhone X took the second and third spots, respectively, in the United States. And Hurricanes Harvey, Jose, and Maria joined Irma on the top global news searches list.

The internet giant has released its annual round up of what people around the world have been typing into its search engine and in the south of Ireland it's a mixture of the mundane (How to bleed radiators?), the worthy (How to register to vote? and What is bitcoin?) and the ridiculous (How to make slime?). It shows that people were moved by the tragedies that occurred this year and wanted to help those affected. Other names that made it to the list of most Googled were the following: Kate Fischer, Schapelle Corby, Ben McCormack, Dustin Martin, Cassie Sainsbury, Lisa Wilkinson, Paul Hogan, Katherine Langford and Amber Sherlock. Gucci tops the list for fashion, with the rest of the top 10 list filled out by the heavyweights: Chanel, Dior, Valentino and more.
