Snow and Storm Caroline heading for Ireland
A separate snow and ice warning has been issued for all but the south-east of Scotland until 6pm on Saturday.
Forecasters are expecting the storm - the third named storm of the year - to bring gusts of up to 80mph in northern Scotland.
Severe gales and snow showers have caused travel disruption, school closures and power cuts as Storm Caroline sweeps in to the UK.
The Met Office said the high winds were expected to damage buildings and cause flying debris, as well as power cuts, severe travel disruption and risky waves.
The strong winds may affect Scotland's road, rail, air and ferry services.
Scottish & Southern Electricity Networks said power had been restored to more than 11,500 customers, mainly on the Western Isles and north-west Highlands, but about 4,600 homes, mainly in Caithness, Orkney and Shetland, remain without power.
"There will be devastating winds in some parts".
A yellow "be aware" weather warning is in place for the region, which runs from 8am on Thursday until just before midnight.
"Storm Caroline is well on its way across northern parts of the U.K.", Met Office meteorologist John West said.
"There may also be bridge restrictions, particularly for high-sided vehicles, and we would urge road users to check the latest information on wind thresholds on the Traffic Scotland website to see where this is likely". Train services between Glasgow Central and Neilston were cancelled or delayed while staff removed the obstacle.
"However, there is also a yellow wind warning in force for the rest of Scotland and the north of Northern Ireland for Thursday, as gusts up to 60-70mph are expected quite widely there".
The showers and winds will die down on Friday night, and widespread frost and icy patches will return as temperatures fall to between minus 2 and plus 3 degrees.
