School closings, delays ahead of possible winter weather Friday

This is generally a 3-6 inch snowfall with a few exceptions

Total accumulations of a quarter to a half inch are expected, primarily on grassy and elevated surfaces, with locally higher accumulations up to 1 inch possible in the higher elevations of East Alabama.

A cold rain will continue to fall throughout Thursday with temperatures in the 40s that don't budge. This will most likely be in isolated areas. The air is too dry over the northern third of the state for any meaningful precipitation tomorrow, and the low levels will be too warm for snow tomorrow across southeast Alabama.

However, we could see slick spots on bridges in these areas where cold air gets below the road, so be aware of that Friday morning.

According to Jonathan Lamb, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Charleston, snow isn't expected in the Lowcountry any time soon. Still, some minor accumulations will be possible for some.

A storm system is now expected to move closer to the Atlantic coast than was initially anticipated, upping the probability that most areas of New Jersey will see their first snow accumulations of the season this weekend. This is certainly to cause some excitement in these areas Friday, but the overall impact will be very limited.

Stay with WDSU.com for updates on the weather conditions. One of the potential problems Friday night will be the possibility of icy patches as temperatures fall into the mid 20s.

Tuesday: Mostly sunny, high near 26.

The high will be in the low 60s on the weekend and temperatures will range from the mid-50s to the lower 60s Monday through Wednesday, the NWS says. Snow cover helps keep the air temperature colder than it otherwise would be.

Have a great day!
